Another one bites the dust

A few months ago there were three lovely independant fabric stores in Seattle. One retired and closed. Then there were two. Now another is moving on and shutting down. I'm sorry to see her go but, I didn't get there much anyway. It's in a neighborhood north of here that does not have great parking and is very near a JoAnne's chain fabric store. So every time I thought about going over to District Fabric I figured I might as well go on to JoAnne's while I was there and maybe stop by Fred Meyers and then it just became a whole thing. Plus, I never found amazing stuff that I could not live without. Had it been more convenient, I probably would have kept a closer eye on her inventory and done more business with her.

On the up side, everything is 10% off starting tomorrow so I think that will get me off my lazy ass.

I love Amazon and it is my default shopping. I shop there because 1. I can do it without getting off my lazy ass. 2. Often the prices are better than elsewhere and 3. They have everything. I got sucked into Subscribe and Save a long time ago. Once a month I get refills on everything from tape to soap.

Somehow Amazon got about a dozen addresses for me. All exactly the same. Why does it need a dozen? It does not. So I deleted 11 of them. That totally fucked up my Subscribe and Save. And in true Amazon fashion, there was no way to fix it easily. I could delete everything one by one and resubscribe to everything one by one. OR... I could cherry pick those things that really need to come from Amazon regularly (because they are dirt cheap and/or impossible to find elsewhere) and deep six the other 20 odd orders. So that's what I did. Turns out most of them were no longer 1. The cheapest and 2. things I couldn't easily find at the grocery store or order when I need them.

A nice bit of unshopping.

If the bed remote control (out for delivery now) does not work, I might go bed shopping this afternoon. Probably not but this bed thing has been bugging the shit out of me now for 6 months and I'm over it. It's a fixable problem and I want it fixed now.

Baseball game tonight at 5. The Mariners almost always suck but this year they are trying to outdo themselves. Being a Mariner fan means having a very light touch with winning. Been that way for years and years. And we're used to it. But, it's annoying just the same. Yes, it's early in the season and they could pull out of it but... 40+ years of history says don't count on it. So I don't.

But, I should get dressed. So I will.

The new bed remote came and didn't work. OMG I'm soooooo sick of this!

So I called. I was so angry and so frustrated and so not nice to the woman at the other end of the phone. Turns out she's the one who sold me the $100 replacement remote last October that started the whole mess.

She told me to check the one plug. I crawled under the bed as best I could and couldn't see the plug and she kept asking me if it was plugged in and I kept telling her that I couldn't see anything plugged in there and over and over and I was really losing what little of 'it' I had to start with.

She said she had a technician she could send for $180 an hour and a new motor would cost $160 - 'but you could install it yourself, it just takes a philips head screwdriver'. I wanted to suggest she not put a weapon in my hand.

She called the technician who was out on a call and left a message with his wife to have him call me. Then she gave me his number. And we hung up.

I dug out a manual from their limited online collection that at least showed me what plug she was talking about. I finally wedged myself in there under the bed enough to see the plug and pull it out. And then the bed did nothing. There were three slots for plugs and I didn't know which one it came out of but I could only reach one of them. I finally managed to get whatever it was plugged into the one port I could reach.

And... after 6 frustrating months... the fucking bed works again!!! No shit. Really.

I called the technician's wife and canceled his call and then wrote the Leggett and Platt woman an email to tell her I got it working and to apologize for my being such an asshole.

I'm exhausted. But relieved.

Goto Recipes

When I was younger - way way younger - I was totally into dinner parties as in throwing them. Yep. I had two goto dinners. One was a very impressive chicken kiev. It was a bitch to make but it was really pretty and when you sliced into it and the butter spurted out, no one was ever not wow'd. And it was easy to match with sides.

My other goto was a really pretty tasty carnivore melange of chicken, cream of mushroom soup, onions, garlic, sour cream and sherry. Usually over rice. It wasn't nearly as impressive or as attractive as the kiev but omg was it yummy and easy.

The other day I got a whole baked chicken at Safeway. I had it nuked warm for dinner two nights running and a really wonderful chicken sandwich for lunch one day. Then I stripped the carcass and chopped up the meat and made a variation of the old cream of mush chicken. I didn't have any sherry and I forgot the garlic and the chicken was bits and cooked. (The original recipe involved cooking the chicken in the soup.)

We didn't have fresh mushrooms back then so I used canned. I didn't have mushrooms on hand yesterday but I did have a can of emergency mushrooms.

Last night I had it over rice. Tonight I had it over flat curly noodles. It was pretty freakin tasty both ways! A delicious change from my usual fare plus it gave my tastebuds a little deja vu.

I have one serving left and I think I'm going to freeze it and see how it does after it's thawed. I am absolutely going to lay in some sherry and get some more emergency mushrooms (but also use real ones next time).

That $8 chicken did a fine job. I'm impressed.
