25 years ago today

I was madly rushing to get out of work and get home to watch the World Series. It was the Oakland vs. San Francisco. I had just moved to California and I had followed the whole road to very closely and was very excited. I finally extracted myself from work and hauled ass home.

I turned on the TV and got a beer out of the fridge and was on the way up the stairs with my panty hose half off when it hit. The Loma Prieta earthquake. It seemed to go on forever. Crockery flew around my house and a fair amount of stuff fell over. And then there was deadly silence. Seriously, the most amazing silence.

Then you could hear mothers screaming for their kids. I lived in a condo complex with LOTS o' kids.

There was no electricity. So no TV, no hum of the fridge, nothing.

The game??!!! I've got to get the game!! I got the rest of my panythose off and then scrambled into the Spare Room Of Junk to dig out my battery operated TV. And then hunted down batteries. And then found a corner of the house where I could get a station and learned that the whole area was a mess there would be no World Series that day...

The Giants are back in the World Series this year. And that wasn't my first or last earthquake but... still...

25 years ago today. Wild.

I had a very good swim this morning. There's a new girl in morning swims who shares my lane for about half of my swim. She's a very considerate lane mate and keeps me going. Nice. I hope she keeps it up.

Today is absolutely laundry day. The hamper is full and my agenda is clear.

We have two new broadband internet options coming to our building. They were supposed to be ready in August and then in September and so far not yet and I'm not sure what the hole up is. I was interested only from a hmmmmmm standpoint because I have honestly been ok with Comcast.

But... now I'm not so sure. I would like to have a static IP and Comcast does not offer that here (business customers only) and their fastest home speed isn't that fast. The coup de gras, however, is steady or lack of it. Lately, I'm getting no internet, some slow internet, regular ok speed - lather, rinse, repeat. The issue may be my router. The new one comes today. But, I'm beginning to suspect it's Comcast.

Dumping their internet (but keeping the TV which I for sure want to do) and getting the faster, more reliable service will likely be overall more expensive but the internet is pretty darned important to me - every day all day. And I want it stead, fast and reliable. And I'm willing to pay for it.

Soooo as soon as they get this new stuff set up and ready to go, I may well be making some changes.

But now it's laundry. Time to get that going and then maybe get dressed.

When annoying people happen

The resident manager for our condo building is hired by Homeowners Association Board of Directors who are elected by all of is who own units in this building. We've had a bunch in our 22 year history. Some have been good, some have been not so good. All have been nice and respectful until we hit this current one.

If he had been living here since the beginning and I had just moved in yesterday and he was elected by all of us and anointed by God, I could possibly justify his offensive communications and condescending behavior.

His emails are confusing, full of typos and extraneous information and 3 different fonts in 3 different colors with highlighting. I try to pull out the teensy bit of cogent information from each and file those suckers fast so I don't have to look at them.

I try as hard as I can to avoid actually coming face to face with him as much as possible because every time I do, he finds a way to insult me - usually passive aggressively. Just now he was so overt that I just asked him to to please not insult me. His smile and tone indicated he'd hit pay dirt.

On the up side, I think I'm going to be asked to serve on the board in a couple of months and my response is going to be "I'd be happy to take my turn, but not while Michael is working here." I'm kind of relieved to have a good 'out'. On the other hand, it might be smarter to go ahead and get on the board and, as his reporting superior, just make his smug self suffer.
